This Helps You Identify Bottlenecks Which Are Constraining Your Growth

Hey gang! Aaron here, just shooting a quick video from East London in one of the hottest days of the year so far – absolutely blistering.
I was just been listening to an incredible book called Essentialism by a guy called Greg McKeown. If you just search for Essentialism book, it will come up.
Basically, it talks about on how to really focus on what’s essential and remove everything which is not. One of the points that’s really, really hit home for me – there’s a couple really – but the first one: How to create buffers in your life and in your business.
He used the analogy of if you’re driving down the motorway a hundred miles an hour and you’re one inch behind the car in front and you’ve got no buffer. In case they hit the brakes then you’re going to crash, you’re going to cause some damage and that’s obviously what we don’t want.
That is the first big point for me.
How many times have you kind of estimated that it’s going to take certain amount of time to do a task and it’s taken like four times longer? That has happened to me. And to be honest, I’ve never been really great in getting better but it’s really an insight for me which means, okay, what things am I overestimating? How am I creating additional stress by thinking I can get things done in a certain amount of time and not be able to?
The second thing is he tells a story about a book called ‘The Goal’ by Eliyahu Goldratt and this has come up a couple of times. A mentor of mine also told me about it recently as well. It is talking about the constraints in a system. It’s basically about where we’re the bottlenecks in your life and in your business.
It talks specifically around the breakthrough that a business owner had. It references this parable which is called the Goal by Eliyahu Goldratt. It talks about a guy who had a challenge at work where his manufacturing processes weren’t really working out. He had a breakthrough when he took young children on a hiking trip. It was quite apparent after a while that each child was walking at a different pace and there were some guys that really struggled and some guys that really didn’t.
What happened is, all these children started to be spread out across the whole over a mile or two. They were trying to make the sunset at the top of this hill but it was a real struggle because the guy at the back was causing everybody to be dispersed.
He thought about it, and he realized that the thing to do is to put the slowest at the front and then to remove all the weight from this guy’s backpack and start doing that to all the children in the order of how fast they can walk. What soon started to happen is the guy who was once at the back called Herby, in this example, started to be able to walk a bit faster as they took a lot of the weight out of his backpack. In the end they started removing all the weight from the slower kids’ backpacks and they started to speed up. Eventually, they actually were able to meet the sunset on time.
In that moment, that kind of caused a big breakthrough for, in the story, the guy who owns the business because he was able to realize where the constraints were in the system. In this case, it was Herby, the poor kid at the back, and take the burden out of his backpack.
How does that translate to your business and in your life?
Something that I have a huge, huge breakthrough very recently is fixing the constraints in our business but also how it’s playing out in my personal life as well. In terms of your e-commerce FBA business, in what areas of the business are moving much slower than you would have hoped? Is there a thing that you just never get to? Things that get ages and ages, if that’s the case then maybe it’s a good idea to just take a sit down and look at what point in your business is the slowest moving thing – things that are holding you back.
In a lot of people’s cases it could be you just got so much to do, there’s so much on your plate and you’re not getting enough leverage or help. Or, you might not be working on the things that are really important to move you towards your outcomes. It could be how it takes 6 months to launch a product. Okay, well, trace that back: Where are the constraints in that system? Where are the bottlenecks?
Then, try to alleviate these bottlenecks with getting some help building a system using checklists, SOPs. Have a think about that and try to identify. So, my question to you is, what area of your business has the biggest constraint right now? Is it, “okay, I’m not just launching enough products,” as I have mentioned or is it a different area of our business which is really taking too long and it’s causing the whole business to come to either grinding halt or not just move forward fast enough.
So guys, that’s my little insight for today. Hope you enjoy summer or winter, wherever you are in the world. Until next time, speak to you soon!
